Mizuhiki is the art of string tying which is often used for decorating envelopes and gifts.

In Japan, there is a custom of gifting money in an envelope on ceremonial occasions, and Mizuhiki is used for the envelopes.

These days, various ways of tying have been invented. For example, there are well-designed Mizuhiki works or Mizuhiki crafts.

Originally, Mizuhiki is made of paper, but some are covered silk or film.

Color of mizuhiki

There are a lot of Mizuhiki colors. we use several color combinations depending on the situation.

For example, when Mizuhiki is used for celebration, we use “white and red” Mizuhiki.

In addition, combinations of “gold and silver” and “red and gold” are used for celebration.

On the other hand, combinations of “black and white”, “yellow and white” and “blue and white” or “So-gin” which means double silver is used for unfortunate.

Color scheme is also defined, It's also defined that right and left color scheme, we put dark colors on the right side, light color is on the left side.

Moreover, how you arrange the colors matters. As a rule, we put dark colors on the right side, light colors on the left side.

The ways of tying Mizuhiki in different situations

Mizuhiki have many kinds of tying. There are roughly 2 types of tying: “Musubikiri” and “Chomusubi”(bowknot). Musubikiri is difficult to untie once tied. Chomusubi is easy to untie.

Musubikiri is used for events that we want to happen only once, for example, wedding or recovery from illness. 

These types of knots include “Awajimusubi” and Tight knot.

On the other hand, Chomusubi is used for events that we want to happen repeatedly such as cerebration for baby’s birth or going on to the next stage of education because that can be tied up again and again.

The rules of Mizuhiki in Japanese culture

The number of Mizuhiki strings is basically 1,3,5 or 7.

The standard number is five; 3 Mizuhiki strings are simplified and 7 Mizuhiki strings are more polite than 5.

There are 2 reasons of using odd numbers of Mizuhiki: １Even numbers are divisible by 2, that means bad luck, 2 odd numbers are thought to be positive and even numbers are thought to be negative based on Yin and Yang principle in China.

Exceptionally, we use 10 Mizuhiki strings at a wedding, that means double happiness in the sense that double of 5.

Mizuhiki in many scenes

Nowadays, we have many types of Mizuhiki knots, these are called “Kazari musubi (tying for decoration) “.

For example, “Umemusubi” is designed to look like a plum flower, and “Kamemusubi” is designed to look like a tortoise-shell.

And the range of occasion to use Mizuhiki is expanded. It is now used not only for gift money envelopes but also for gift boxes, flower arrangements, and handmade accessories etc.

Mizuhiki kinds and colors have become more and more abundant.

水引は贈答品にかける紐のことです。
日本では冠婚葬祭の際にお金を渡す習慣があり、そのために使われる封筒に水引が使われているのが一般的です。
最近は様々な結び方が開発され、可愛くアレンジされた水引や、水引細工といったものもあります。
元々は紙で作られたものが一般的ですが、人工の絹やビニール等でおおわれているものもあります。

水引の色

水引の色には様々な種類がありますが、用途により、決まった色の組み合わせで使われています。
例えばお祝い全般に使われる場合には紅白、赤と白の水引を使います。
このほかにも慶事には、金銀、赤金といった組み合わせが、弔事には白黒、黄白、青白、銀が使用されるようです。
また、左右の配色も、濃い色が右側、薄い色が左側と決まっているようです。

シーンによって異なる水引の結び方

水引には様々な結び方があります。 
結びの種類としては大きく2種類に分かれていて、一度結ぶと簡単にはほどけない結びきりとほどける花結びがあります。

結び切りは、1度だけにしたいもの、2度あってはならないものに使います。例えば、結婚や、快気祝い、弔事などです。淡路結び、堅結びなどがあります。
一方、蝶結びは何度も結び直せるので、繰り返し起きてほしい出来事に使います。例えば、出産や、進学などです。

一般的に使われる水引の本数

水引の本数は1本、3本、5本、7本が基本です。
ご祝儀などでは5本を使うのが、基本形であり、3本結びは簡素化したもの、7本結びはより丁寧にしたものです。
奇数の本数を使う理由としては、①偶数は割り切れるから、縁起が良くない、②中国の陰陽説によると、偶数は陰数、奇数は陽数ということに由来するという説もあります。
婚礼では、（例外的に？）10本を使いますが、これは、奇数の基本である5本を倍にして、豪華さとさらなる幸福、という意味で二重の喜びを表現するものという意味です。

様々なところで使われる水引

現在は様々な結び方が発明されており、これらを飾り結びと呼びます。
梅の花のような梅結び、亀の甲をモチーフにした亀結びなどがあります。
また、使うシーンも金封だけでなく、ラッピングや、花束、アクセサリー等ハンドメイドでも幅広く使われるようになり、活用の幅が広がっています。
水引のカラーや、種類もかなり豊富になってきているようです。
